What is clinical health psychology?
Patients who have been diagnosed with a medical condition often find that the accompanying emotional and psychological distress cannot be solved by treatment of the medical problem. For example, a patient diagnosed with cancer or another terminal illness receives treatment for the disease, including physical therapy and medication. However, there are numerous psychological difficulties that can arise from having a chronic medical condition, the most common of which are anxiety and depression. Clinical health psychology is an expanding field in which people with medical problems are also treated for psychological difficulties.

What’s the difference between seeing a regular psychologist and a health psychologist?
Psychologists use their knowledge of the behavior of the human mind to provide mental health care. A clinical health psychologist takes this process a step further, applying psychology to problems related to a physical illness, such as chronic disease, diabetes, addiction, or an eating disorder.

Do you only see people who have physical illnesses?
No. I am licensed in general psychology and am happy to work with people seeking help for a variety of psychological issues, whether or not they also have a physical illness.

Do you treat children and adults?
Yes. I specialize in children and adolescents, but I also see adults.

I have a medical condition. Will you consult with my doctor?
Yes, after you provide your consent, I will consult with whoever provides your medical care, which may include your doctors, psychiatrist, or family members.

Will you prescribe medication?
I cannot prescribe medication. However, I will consult with your psychiatrist or medical practitioner if you and I decide that a medication will help your mental health development.

Do you take insurance? What are your fees?
I work with most insurance companies, though I may need to be registered as an out-of-network provider. All fees are determined on a client-to-client basis. Contact me directly to discuss fees and insurance options. I am dedicated to helping you get the therapy you need, and I will try to work within your means.
